“When I started in the recruitment industry in 1988, we didn’t have the Internet or even dumb terminals on our desks! We had hand-written application forms and a plastic box of A5 cards. In those days we interviewed every candidate face-to-face, sitting in an open plan office engulfed in cigarette smoke! We would call our clients immediately on their office telephone, do a brief presentation and arrange an interview. Mobile phones were in their infancy; a suitcase with a handset that was so bulky it hardly seemed worth the trouble, not to mention the expense! The rule was that we could only send a CV via facsimile once the interview had been arranged.
So here we are in 2017, no one wants to take your call any longer! Most folk are just too busy with their email to speak in person or return your call. Our industry has grown organically; we warmly embrace emerging technologies and social media. We love using our business tools but many seem to have lost the ability to understand human nature. After all, people are still people. Human beings need to communicate! They need prompt feedback, advice and support. Most of all they need Recruiters to provide total transparency and look after their interests…” SJK
